What to do in Lawrence when you only have 30 minutes

Located on State Highway 8 approximately an hour from Dunedin, Alexandra, and Gore the town of Lawrence is a popular stop for petrol, pies, and a potty break. Here’s what you can do in Lawrence when you need a break from driving and don’t have much time to spare.

Visit the public toilets

A popular question at the Visitor Centre is “Where is the public toilet?” You will find it located right beside the Night n Day. Look for the statue of the gold miner.

Brush up on your history

Get a quick overview of the gold rush at the Tuapeka Goldfields Museum. Although you might be short on time, a visit to the main gold room provides a fascinating glimpse into the area's rich history as the origin of the Otago gold rush.

Stretch your legs

Take a leisurely stroll through the picturesque Domain, wander around Bellview Wetlands, or enjoy a stretch and some fresh air at the historic reserve of Gabriel’s Gully. All options are a great way to relax and rejuvenate during your short stop in Lawrence after a day of driving.

Window shop

Local shopkeepers are masters of window displays. Take a moment to admire the creative window displays of the local shops. From vintage gifts and fashion to books and jewellery, you might just find a hidden gem worth taking home.

Let the kids run around at the playground

If you're travelling with children, let them burn off some energy at the newly renovated playground. With a safe and enclosed area, it's the perfect spot for a quick play session before getting back on the road.

Grab some light refreshments

Stock up on snacks and drinks at one of our wonderful establishments. If you only have a moment to stop, the Night n Day is perfect for a quick fuel-up before hitting the road again. Their ice creams are legendary.

Even with just 30 minutes in Lawrence, there are plenty of delightful activities to make the most of your brief visit. We invite you to return soon and explore more of our charming town's offerings.
